Viruses happen so I can't (yet) be convinced that this was entirely a conspiracy from the start, but it is becoming clear that the reaction was deliberate.  For a long time, I've thought that all politicians get conformed to the system and there are people in charge who make sure that happens.  It's why I was generally surprised by Trump, winning and going his own way even when it didn't seem to make much sense.  But it could explain why the unelected government was all against him from the start and would do anything to override him.  They rule, nothing else is permitted.
